The Mission of Our School
We are committed to providing a safe, nurturing and inviting learning environment that facilitates life-long learning and maximizes achievement for all students. We support the York Region District School Board's Mission that "we unite in our purpose to inspire and prepare learners for life in our changing world community".
History
Reesor Park Public School is named after an older, well established, original family from the Town of Markham. During the summer of 1804, Christian Reesor and his family emigrated from Pennsylvania, settling on land granted from the Crown at Lot 14, Concession 10 in Markham Township, York County, Upper Canada. As more people settled in the township on the east corner of Highway 48 and Highway 7, lot 11, concession 8 was also sold to Joseph Reesor, another one of the large number of Pennsylvania Germans who made this area their home. A few years later, several homes stood on this corner. This small community became known as Reesorville. Today, Reesor Road and Reesor Park are also named after the Reesor family.
Facilities
Reesor Park Public School was officially opened in 1972, primarily as an open concept school. Additions were made to the original school in 1978 and 1992. Currently, there are 18 classrooms in use, including 14 homerooms, French, Reading Recovery and Special Education classes. We are very fortunate to have a double gymnasium which allows for our physical education program to be maintained while also being able to facilitate presentations, prepare for concerts and operate extra curricular activities.
The York Region District School Board issues a number of permits to Scouts, Girl Guides and Markham Parks and Recreation for evening use of the school gymnasiums.
We are proud of the outdoor classroom and woodlot to the south of our school that provide a natural learning environment for our students. Recently, the playground to the back of the school has been repaired and is fully operational for our students' use.
As well, the kindergarten playground at the front of the school is being upgraded.
The YMCA operates a Before and After School program for children enrolled at Reesor Park. Students attending the program participate in various activities including computer and gym time, as well as a snack and a craft activity.
In addition to the Before and After School program, a Best Start kindergarten daycare program will be implemented in March 2006 for kindergarten students attending Reesor Park. Daycare will be provided on alternate days or during the afternoon to link with the kindergarten schedule. Kindergarten and daycare teachers will collaborate to provide effective programming. This will facilitate further opportunities to build community capacity as well as enhance reading readiness skills for our young students.
Other facilities include the municipal park adjacent to the school. The tennis courts, soccer field, baseball diamond and playground equipment are an integral part of the park.
Markham's water tower, just north of the school on Wootten Way is a long standing landmark.
Transportation
The York Region District School Board has a transportation policy that applies to all of its schools.
Reesor Park Public School has some students that travel by school bus, but the majority live within close distance to the school. We are proud that our community values healthy living as many of our students roller blade, bicycle ride or walk to school.
