Character Trait for March - Perseverance
Administrator’s Message
Kudos
Thanks to all that participated in the Flag Day celebration at Markville Mall on February 15. Our students represented Reesor Park well. Thanks to Ms. Folkes and Ms. Steele for their leadership with our choir. This was another great community activity!
Our students and staff are very busy at this time of the year. It is really important to thank our Teachers and Support Staff for all their extra curricular efforts. From music to basketball, from eco clubs to winter festivals, the staff at Reesor Park understands the importance of extracurricular activities in making your children’s school experience as complete and rewarding as possible.
I also want to take the time to salute our parent volunteers who support our classroom programs by reading with students, processing book orders, coordinating elective programs and who endlessly cut and paste so that our teacher are able to spend time planning and teaching.
Term 2 Report Cards
Your child’s report card will be sent home on March 12. Please sign and return page three by Friday March 13. If you have any concerns about your child’s progress please contact your child’s teacher.
EQAO Dates Primary: May 26, 27, 28 Junior: June 1-3
Thank You
Reesor Park would like to thank Tim Horton’s for their support towards the purchase of hot chocolate and paper cups during our Healthy Schools Winter Festival.
Electives

Thanks to the hard work and excellent organization of our electives committee, electives were a huge success yet again. Many thanks to Nitsa Mangos and her committee of volunteers for their commitment to this project.
Electives
Once again, the electives were a huge success. Two fun filled days away from the classroom. Downhill skiing, cross country skiing, art, karate, cooking, mad science, live animals, bowling, sports, circus and woodworking.
Many thanks to Maryjane, Sarah, Mark, Brenda, Deb, Andrea H, Andrea P, Dawn and all the teachers, staff and parent volunteers. Special thanks to Mrs. Dilworth and Mrs. McKenzie. We could not have done it without all of you!
Nitsa Mangos
Primary News
The Primary Division would like to thank families who donated treats and/or their time for Valentine’s Fun! It is a great time to celebrate Friendship together. The staff and students appreciate your involvement!
We have passed our 100th day of school! Students in the Primary Division used this opportunity to practise their Mathematics skills by counting to 100 in a variety of ways. Thank you for your support of this event.
**February Reading Tip:**
Here are a few tips when reaching a “tricky word” in reading: look at the pictures, think about the story, and/or re-read the beginning of the sentence. Good readers use any of these strategies to solve words. Look for a review of more strategies next month.
Primary classes are working on two performances: 1Z and 1/2W are preparing the play “Three of a Kind”. 2B, 2/3E, and 3/4F are practising “The Cheese Stands Alone”. We look forward to enjoying all of their hard work at their final performances; details will be sent home closer to the date.
Primary Birthdays:
Happy Birthday to Charlotte H., Hannah P., Connor P., Catherine M., Abby P., Victoria B., Kesten G., Megan S., Ashna P., and Kaitlyn S.
Junior News
The Junior Division has been very busy working hard during the cold and short month of February. The grade fours have been working on their stories, learning about light and sound and look forward to start playing the recorder. The grade fives are finishing up their ‘Becoming a Canadian Citizen’ projects. The grade sixes have completed their vertebrate science assignment. The projects look great and are displayed up in the junior hall.
Madame Alan is really noticing improvement in French for the students who practise regularly with the DVD at home. Instead of using a DVD player with the TV, some of the children are using the DVD in laptops and even Playstation video games. Please remember to sign and return the practice calendar at the beginning of each month. A note signed by a parent is an acceptable alternative if a calendar has been lost, although there are extra copies available in Madame Alan’s classroom.
Our character trait for the month of February is Initiative which is a very important learning skill. Students are expected to practice new skills, seek challenges and new opportunities for learning and recognize what needs to be done and follow through independently. Those students who have demonstrated those skills will be recognized at our junior assembly.
Amongst all of the students’ hard work the juniors have also had a lot of fun at Reesor’s winter festival and electives. We would like to thank all the parent volunteers for all your help and support. We also look forward for your continued support for our upcoming trip to the R.O.M next month.
Intermediate Division News
Winter Carnival
In the past few months, Reesor Park has been an extremely busy and active school. In the month of January, Reesor Park had a winter carnival. Everyone in the school participated, from Kindergarten to Grade 8. In the morning, everyone was separated into their 4 teams: orange, red, green, and blue. The intermediate students were leaders and helped the younger students in the activities. All of these activities allowed intermediate students to demonstrate leadership and cooperation skills. Everyone had a great time playing in the snow!
Dance
On February 13th of 2009, the intermediates had a Valentine’s Dance. The theme of this dance was “Red Carpet with Celebrities.” Students were encouraged to dress-up as a celebrity for the dance. Students had an opportunity to walk down the red carpet with paparazzi taking pictures and bouncers letting them in.

Some of the awards which were presented at the dance included:
Best Smile – Filip B. (8W) Cutest Couple – Garrett & Julie (8W)
Best Dressed – Lauren W. (8W) Best Hair – Avery L. (8J)
Best Sunglasses – Jehan B. (8W) Best Look-Alike – Liam M. (8W)
Best Moves – Ken K. (8W) Best Pose – Emily M. (7A)
Everyone had a wonderful time!
Electives
Electives are currently active around the school, from the primary division to the intermediate division. The intermediate division had an opportunity to visit Dagmar and Willowgrove. Skiing and snowboarding took place at Dagmar Ski Resort. At Willowgrove, it was an outdoor learning experience for intermediates as they learned how to read a compass and understand nature’s life cycle.

MUSIC NEWS

Concert Band and Jazz Band members continue early Tuesday and Thursday morning rehearsals in preparation for our spring concert night. More information regarding times will be sent home at a later date.
Congratulations to grade 5 students in Mr. Freidman's class who are working hard to obtain their recorder belts. A few of the students have achieved their "black belts"! Well done! A reminder that recorder should be in music class every Tuesday and Friday and that practice logs should be handed in when complete.
Good luck to the following grade 8 students who will be auditioning on March 11 for a place in the York Region Elementary Enrichment Band: Jehan, Cheyenne, Callum, Kevin, Garrett, Grace, Liam, Julie and Robert. These students have been attending extra help classes on a regular basis to prepare for this audition. Good luck!
Congratulations to the members of the Area Band who have worked hard this year to learn this fun, yet challenging music in preparation for our Area Band Tour, which begins on April 2nd and runs until April 23rd. This year's members are Richard, Arjun, Tory, JJ, Callum, Kevin, Cheyenne, Avery, Julie, Robert, Liam and Grace.
As always, a reminder to parents that practice sheets are due the first music class of each month.
Musically yours,
J. Morrison
Reesor Park “School of Fish”

Does this describe you? Attentive, caring, gentle, loves nature--particularly fish???
We are looking for someone to volunteer to look after our “school of fish” located in the main office area.
Over the past four years, Mr. Swanson ( parent of a former Reesor Park student) has very generously and graciously donated his time and effort caring for our fish and maintaining our tank for us.. We thank him very much for doing such a great job and appreciate the fact that he continued to come in even after his daughter graduated to high school. The tank always looked sparkling clean and our fish happy and healthy!
We are doing our best to keep things up now but could really use your help…..
Over the years, so many students, families and visitors have enjoyed and been entertained by the many varieties of fish in all shapes, sizes and colours.
Greg Thomson, our Lead Caretaker (and Jack of all trades!!!) has been feeding our fish, as well, however, we really need someone to come in occasionally to check that the tank is functioning properly and replace any fish when necessary.

Student Photos by Lifetouch - New Spring Program –
Reesor Park P.S. community feedback results
To date we have replies from twelve (12) families interested in ordering the Spring package of student photos.
Lifetouch will not provide this service for less than 40 families so unless others are interested we will not be moving forward with this.
Please contact the office if you are interested but have not responded to date.
Thank you!

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR 2009-2010
Kindergarten registration started January 12, 2009.
“To meet increased classroom space needs within provincial funding we will maintain our procedure of registering Kindergarten students in priority sequence. Once classes reach provincial class size limits, registering students will be placed in classrooms with available capacity at nearby schools in accordance with Board Procedure. In such situations bus transportation will be provided where necessary.” January 2009 letter from Bill Hogarth, Director, YRDSB
Please remind family and friends who are registering a student, for kindergarten, to do so as soon as possible after the January 12th date to avoid disappointment in not securing a spot in the program requested at Reesor Park. Spots in one of our alternated day programs are already filled and we anticipate our half day program to be filled soon also.
FEBRUARY 23RD ASSEMBLY! Ruby the Service Dog!!!
We are very excited to announce that Reesor Park will be adding a new member to its family. This canine member is named Ruby and she is an Autism Service Dog.
Ruby is trained through Autism Dog Serivcies.
Autism Dog Services is a private training school which trains dogs to work with children and families living with autism. These dogs are raised by volunteer families under the guidance of Autism Dog Services ensuring that they receive the best training in house manners, socialization and basic obedience. The dog then undergoes professioanl skills training to learn everything it will need to know to become an autism serivce dog. They are fully trained prior to being introduce to the child and family and are certified to meet all ADI - Assistance Dogs Internation, training standards.
Autism Service Dogs have been known to help modify the child's behaviour and redirect the child's focus. At school, the dog can keep a child at their desk, encourage an increased level of communication, help calm and focus the child during difficult times.

School Security
Keeping our school clean!!!!!
Just a reminder…….
Students are required to have indoor shoes at school (non-marking soles only).
Parents are asked to write their child’s name on their lunch bag.
I am picking up quite a few lunch bags lately and when they are put in the lost and found the left over food spoils and the bag just gets dumped in the garbage. If the student’s name is on the bag. I can return them directly to the students.
Thanks!
Mr. Thomson
School Elective dates – February 17th and 24th, 2009

INTERMEDIATE DIVISION NEWS
HALLOWE'EN FUN
During the afternoon of October 31, the intermediate students threw open the gym doors and entered the darkened gym to the sounds of Disturbia. Costumed students danced to the non-stop music of our awesome deejay. We saw costumes from the past, present and the future, from a 50's pony tailed teeny bopper to a working traffic light! It was a phenomenal afternoon of fun.
Thanks to our student LEAD social committee for setting up the scary decorations and for arranging a snack table. A huge thanks also to the intermediate teachers for surviving their supervision time in the gym. We all had a super time and hope to have other dances this year.
Krysten Sinika
INTERMEDIATE DIVISION - FESTIVE POT LUCK LUNCH
The students and teachers of the intermediate division are looking forward to celebrating a successful first term and the upcoming holiday season at a festive pot luck lunch which will take place during the lunch hour on Thursday, December 18. Each student will contribute a portion of the lunch, which all the intermediate students and teachers will enjoy as a group together in the gym.
NEED EXTRA HELP OR A PLACE TO START HOMEWORK?
Having trouble getting homework started once you arrive home? Textbooks too heavy to carry home all at once? Need to meet with your group to plan or work on a project? Math problems frustrating? French is Greek to you? We have the solution!
A reminder to families of intermediate students that the school library, extra help opportunities and homework club are available to help keep intermediate students up to date and on track for success.
• Room 116 is available for homework, extra help or group meetings four days a week after school,
• science help is available Tuesdays during morning recess,
• the Reesor Park school library is open every day during both morning and lunch time recesses and
• each teacher will readily make appointments for individual assistance as needed by students.
Please encourage your child/ren to take advantage of these opportunities as they strive to reach their academic goals.
Empathy is the capacity to recognize or understand another's state of mind or emotion. It is often characterized as the ability to "put oneself into another's shoes", or in some way experience the outlook or emotions of another being within oneself. Empathy does not necessarily imply compassion, or empathic concern because this capacity can be present in context of compassionate or cruel behavior.
